The famous punkah fan was used in India in the early 500 BC. It was a hand-held fan made from bamboo strips or other plant fibre, that could be rotated or fanned. During British rule, the word came to be used in a special sense by Anglo-Indians to mean a large swinging fan, fixed to the ceiling, and pulled by a servant, called the punkawallah.
The English architect Sir Christopher Wren applied an early ventilation system in the Houses of Parliament that used bellows to circulate the air. The Houses of Parliament would be the catalyst for much later improvement and innovation.
Although extractor fans did not become popular in homes until the late 50s and 60s they were still only used in industrial and commercial buildings. It wasn't until the 70s and 80s that manufactures like Hotpoint, Creda, Bosch Neff to name a few started developing the domestic extractor fan to fit above a hob or cooker. We also call them cooker hoods of extractor chimneys. A must for just about every new home built today.
